Warriors Falter at Sunny HillsThe Warriors traveled to La Serna HS for the pool play of the prestigious Sunny Hills tournament. In the first round, the Warriors took on a strong Glendora team, that only had 1 loss on thir record. The Warriors seemed ready in the frigid 48 degree morning cold. The Warriors definitely took the play to Glendora, controlling most of the game but it was Glendora that went up a goal at the 19th minute. West continued their domination, but the shots were not strong. Finally in the 64th minute, Carla Castro found the end of a Nikki Payne corner kick and toed it past the Glendora keeper to equalize. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
In the afternoon game, the Warriors took on Sultana. The Warriors completely dominated again, but the lack of finishing came into play in this game. West outshot Sultana in each half, but the shots were either too soft or the Sultana keeper was able to save them. Sultana capitalized in the second half after two great saves by West GK Annie Hagen, but a Sultana player was able to put away the follow up shot as the West defense looked on. West lost 1-0. The Warriors took 3rd place in their bracket, yet were easily the better team in both games.
In the consolation bracket, the Warriors overmatched a Long Beach Jordan in a shortened game. Annie Hagen had an easy game in goal, turning away the only shot Jordan had. the list is long of West goals and assists: Rebecca Maier-2 goals, 1 assist. Kristen Pepperling,- 1 goal, 1 assist. Nicole Payne, Heather Ostrom, Aiko Seffinger, and Ashley Kawasaki all had 1 goal. Allie Levy- 2 assists. Kayla Gonzalez and Laura Joseph each had 1 assist. 7-0 West.
In the final of the consolation bracket, West took on Sonora. Heather Ostrom got right on track in the 5th minute, when she turned with the ball and cracked a shot from 30 yards out that beat the Sonora keeper. Sonora equalized in the 25th minute on great strike from 35 yards out that dipped over Annie Hagen and into the side net. The Warriors continued to control the game and battled the whole game long. In the final minute of the game, Rebecca Maier took a ball and dribbled to the endline. Maier looked up, and made a hard cross that was dummied by Heather Ostrom and found Ashley Kawasaki. Ashley hit the ball first time to score the game winning goal. Warriors win 2-1.
It was a great end to the tournament but the Warriors were disappointed, knowing that they should have been competing for a semi final spot. Updated on:December 26, 2008, 8:21 pmCosta Gets the Best of West in a Tight GameIn the 3rd place game of the South Tournament, the Warriors faced Bay League rivals Mira Costa at Spartan Stadium.
The game was a normal Mustang vs Warrior battle, with opportunities at both ends. In the 19th minute, Monica Campis drove a free kick into the box that was sent right back to her. She lifted it into the box, where it found Kristen Pepperling. The Mustang keeper began to come out and Pepperling volleyed the ball past the diving keeper for a West 1-0 lead. In the second half, a very questionable call be the referee lead to a Costa pk, that was converted. The tie lasted only a few minutes as the Mustangs sent a cross that seemed out of reach, but a Costa player leaped out and was able to touch the ball in the air. The ball found its way into the inside of the far post for a 2-1 Mira Costa lead. The Warriors battled back and with 1 minute remaining, Ashley Kawasaki was tripped in the box for a Pk. Kristen Pepperling stepped up, placed it far bottom corner, but the Costa keeper was able to touch it out.
This great game ended in a 2-1 loss, but the Warriors kept their heads held high and battled to the final whistle. Updated on:December 26, 2008, 8:10 pm3rd Place Game v Costa Today- 3pm at South(Friday 12/19)After a week of cancelled games due to rain, the Warriors will take on their foes from Mira Costa in the 3rd place game in the South Tournament. The game will be at the South HS Stadium at 3pm, Friday December 19th. Come out and support the Warriors in this epic battle and preview to one of the Bay League's most awaited match ups! Updated on:December 19, 2008, 4:22 pmWeek 2: Hi's and Low'sIn week 2 of the 08-09 season, the Warriors had both ups and downs.
The week started off with a Monday home game v Beverly Hills. The Warriors were very dominant in the game, shutting down the Beverly offense from the very beginning. The Warriors limited the opposing team to a low of 3 shots on the day. Even though West was dominant, a series of weak shots and shots directly at the Goalkeeper kept the Warriors off the board. West's best chance came on Nicole Payne's chance when she turned inside the box, finding herself alone, but hitting her shot right at the Beverly goalie's hands. The Warriors outshot Beverly Hills 19-3, but came away with a 0-0 tie.
On Wednesday, the Warriors hosted San Pedro. Again, a dominant game for the Warriors, but less dominance in the shot count. The Pirates were strictly a counter attack team. Though the Warriors were out shot by the Pirates, 4-3 in the first half, the Warriors went up 1-0 in the 8th minute. Nicole Payne took a ball down the line, and with hardly any angle, lofted a shot that sailed over the Pedro keeper and curled into the far post. In the second half, things opened up after adjustments were made. The Warriors not only dominated play but also the offensive end. The Warriors had plenty of opportunities, the best coming on a beautiful dribbling run by Rebecca Maier in the 71st minute. Maier push the ball past the Pedro defense into the box, but when she seemed to eb going out of bounds, she was able to stop the ball on the line. Maier took a touch towards the keeper, and fired a shot that went through the Pirate goalkeeper's legs. Ashley Kawasaki was there to put the final touch on the ball, into the Pirate net for a 2-0 lead. The West defense shut down the Pedro offense, only allowing 2 shots in the whole second half and giving Annie Hagen her 5th shutout in a row.
On Saturday, the Warriors took on the Torrance Tartars in the quarterfinal match of the South Tournament. Though the Warriors were the more possession oriented team, the Tartars looked more dangerous at times. The Warriors were having problems pressuring the ball, something that would plague them all day. It was Rebecca Maier who broke through for the Warriors first. Maier, stole a Tartar pass at midfield took a couple of touches and hit a shot from about 35 yards out that dipped over the Torrance keeper and into the goal. Once again, adjustments were made at half time and the Warriors stifled the Tartar offense. The Warrior confidence grew with every minute. They started passing, making moves and taking on the opponent one on one. In the 55th minute, Heather Ostrom took advantage of a bad clearance by the Tartars. Ostrom took the ball into the box where 2 defenders and the goalkeeper converged on her. Instead of taking a tough shot, she made a square pass to a wide open Nicole Payne. Payne took a shot that was deflected out by a diving Tartar defender, but the ball went righ back to her and she was able to put her second shot into the net. Warriors win 2-0.
In the semifinals of the South Tournament, the Warriors took on Notre Dame Academy. In a game that featured 35 mph winds, NDA took advantage of the wind in the first half. NDA went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute when a player had no pressure in the middle of the field and ripped a shot from 35 yards out. Annie Hagen made the initial save but was unable to corral the ball. A Notre Dame player was there to clean up the mess and give the Warriors its first goal against of the season. For the next 20 minutes, the Warriors were defensive minded and had a very hard time getting the ball out of their end. In the 24th minute, again it was the more physical Notre Dame that struck again, this time on a corner kick that floated over Hagen and into the Warriors net. The second half, the Warriors still could not manage much possession, as the came became heated and marred by fouls and tempers. Though the Warriors outshot NDA in the second half by a slim margin, neither team was very dangerous. The Warriors fall for the first time this season 2-0. West faces Mira Costa in the 3rd place game on Friday at 3pm at South. Updated on:December 17, 2008, 3:44 amWeek 1: Warriors Start Off Slow...but Begin to Warm Up.The Warriors started off the week with a bit of a let down after a great warm up game with the alumni. The Warriors visited Culver City for the first game of the season. Very shaky to start, the Warriors gave up 2 opportunities to the home team. After that, the defense locked Culver City down and the offense began to pepper the CC goalkeeper with shots. Culver only managed 5 shots on the day, while West amassed 18 shots. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the majority of shots did not end up on frame and, the ones that did, were stopped by the Culver GK. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.
On Saturday, in pool play of the South Tournament, the Warriors scored 7 unanswered goals, while the Warrior defense limited Inglewood to 3 shots total on the day. Kristen Pepperling led the scoring with 2 goals, and Heather Ostrom, Ashley Kawasaki, Laura Joseph, Carla Castro and Monique Arrigotti all with 1 goal.
In the second game of pool play, the Warriors youngest member, Ashley Kawasaki stole a back pass and pushed the ball past the Chadwick goalkeeper for the only goal of the game. The young Chadwick team played well in the first half, keeping the Warriors off their game, but in the second half, the Warriors dominated play. The passes were more accurate and the Warriors were very unlucky to not score another goal. The defense of Aiko Seffinger, Monica Campis and Mandy Oslund were dominant in the back and Annie Hagen had 2 spectacular saves to give the Warriors their 3rd shutout of the season. The Warriors face Torrance in the Quarterfinals next Saturday. Updated on:December 14, 2008, 2:22 amVARSITY LEADS AS ALUMNI TRY TO KEEP UPIn the Annual Alumni game, the Alumni looked to regain their glory of years past at WHS Stadium. The newly picked Varsity had other ideas as they put a strangle hold on the Alumni attack. There were a few current college players on the alumni roster, in Sam Hoffman(El Camino CC), Jessica Murphy(CSUDH), and Megan Cunningham(Sonoma St.), yet they were unable to get their attack going. Heather Ostrom struck first beating the Alumni defense and passing it past Alumni GK Ashley Taylor. Later on in the 1st half, a miss communication in the alumni defense left Kayla Gonzalez with the ball by herself in front of the goal for the 2nd goal.
In the second half it was more of the same! The West Varsity defense was all over the alumni, especially Jessica Murphy! Everytime Jess got the ball, there was at least one defender in front of her! She had one of her shots hit the crossbar and another glance off the far post. Every other shot, GK Annie Hagen was up to stopping! Senior Nicole Payne made it 3-0 with a chip to the far post for the Varsity. Then with 5 minutes remaining, Heather Ostrom found the net again. The alumni made a valiant effort in the end to at least get one goal back, but to no avail as the final whistle blew.
Thank you to all of our alumni and we hope that we see you all at the games during the season....and of course, a great job by the Varsity! Updated on:December 11, 2008, 2:55 amWELCOME BACK WARRIORS!!!After a long awaited layoff, the Warriors Girls Soccer Program is back and ready to Rock!!!
